Based in our Toronto office, Frank Balas is responsible for the energy sector
within Emerald Technology Ventures. He is involved in
all phases of the investment process: from preliminary
evaluation to assisting management during the
investment period. Prior to joining Emerald, Frank
consulted in a variety of energy technologies including
solar thermal, energy efficiency and tail gas scrubbing.
Frank has held a number of positions in gas turbine
development at Pratt & Whitney as well as Rolls-
Royce, and managed the design group at Capstone
Turbine, a startup microturbine manufacturer, where
he was involved in a number of projects including
hybrid busses, micro combined heat & power and
fuel cell/gas turbine combined cycle systems, and was
awarded a patent in turboalternator cooling. Frank
has an engineering degree from McGill University and
an MBA from HEC Montreal. He is fluent in English,
French and German.
